Preconception Care

In Oriental Medicine the most precious essence in each of us is Jing. It is given by each parent at the time of conception and can never be added to, only supported and preserved. The quality of our parents health at the time of conception affects the quality of Jing that we inherit for our lifetime.

Jing is the root of the Kidney Energetic System. Together, our Jing, Kidney Yin and Kidney Yang are the basis of our health and especially our fertility.

A startling reflection of this is in modern day is in semen samples. In the prime of their youth, our grandfathers lowest sperm count is now our highest. This decline of Jing is being passed on from generation to generation in a very short passage of time.

So what can be done about it?

Spermatagenosis (the development of sperm) takes about 3 1/2 months. These rapidly dividing cells are vulnerable and highly influenced by lifestyle and environmental factors. If there has been a history of exposure to highly toxic materials or prolonged exposure to toxic materials, an abusive lifestyle or long periods of illness, then taking  further steps with testing is recommended. Hair analysis may offer some evidence of this. These tests can be done through the Naturopaths at Mother – well or Natural Ange. See Practitioners. If such conditions are not a factor, diagnosis of the tongue, pulse and other bodily signs are used to give an indication of the state of health.Semen samples give more specific insight. Three samples over a period of 6 to 9 months gives a more accurate state of play.

Most often supplementation is useful along with, lifestyle changes allowing for more down time and less stress, dietary changes promoting foods rich in nutrients and enzymes and if necessary Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine.

And for Women,  3-4 months is also one window in terms of egg development. Ovulation is an amazing process that not only provides an egg but orchestrates many other factors involved in conception and implantation.

The Basal Body Temperature (BBT) chart provides many simple insights to add to the Oriental Medicinal perspective.  If there is a history of any difficulty with achieving and maintaining pregnancy, blood tests are also utilized to use this time to rule out as many factors as possible and refine the focus. In this way there is integration of  traditional methods with modern.

All these factors are considered and as for the males the approach to supporting Jing and the Kidney system is varied and personal for each person.
